Accordingly I have been prescribing the chanting of certain slokas as remedies since the last ten years or so. Swami Sachchidananda who had initiated me in Chandi parayana had instructed me to prescribe certain slokas as remedies for problems. Chanting selected slokas for specific results is a practice that is quite common. Most people are content with chanting selected slokas of the text or chanting the Durga Saptashloki seven verses which contains the essence of Chandi, apart from a devout reading of the myth in a language that they are familiar with. Traditionally recitation of the Chandi is a serious and complete sadhana in itself and requires initiation from a Guru. Devi Mahatmyam is seen as an attempt to unify the Vedic male pantheon with the pre-existing mother goddess worship possibly dating to the 9th millennium BCE, and an attempt to define divinity as a shakti, which takes form of the female gender, and that pervades all beings and non-beings and yet is transcendental. By far one of the most important texts of Shaktism, the text has a central place in Shakta ritual. The text contains saptashata 'seven hundred' verses, arranged into 13 chapters. Devi Mahatmyam is also known as the Durg Saptashat or simply Saptashat, Ca or Ca Pha : pha 'reading' refers to the act of ritual reading. It was composed in Sanskrit around CE, with authorship attributed to the sage Rishi Markandeya.
